We build bridges of friendship with individuals and individual families who are so marginalized that they fall outside the social safety net. We provide direct support for the poorest of the poor in the areas of education and health care.
Baba called and he asked me to let the people who help know that today, October 10, is his baby's, Haman's, birthday. He wants us to pray for him and the family today. It is the 9-day celebration in honor of the god Kali, and Baba is sacrificing a goat. He will pray not only for his family, he said, but also for us. I thought all the children were born on October 25. I'm sure I was told this at some point, but he said today is Haman's birthday and Milli and Krishna share the October 25 birthday.
Early in the morning we crossed the ghat, where fires were still smoldering, and gazed, with our Western minds, into the Ganges.A woman was standing in the river up to her waist;she was lifting handfuls of water and spilling itover her body, slowly and many times,as if until there came some momentof inner satisfaction between her own life and the river’s.Then she dipped a vessel she had brought with herand carried it filled with water back across the ghat,no doubt to refresh some shrine near where she lives, for this is the holy city of Shiva, makerof the world, and this is his river.I can’t say much more, except that it all happenedin silence and peaceful simplicity, and something that feltlike that bliss of a certainty and a life livedin accordance with that certainty.I must remember this, I thought, as we fly backto America.Pray God I remember this._______________________Mary Oliver
